Why start AI inventory checking with an exception list?

Book, physical, in-transit and reserved stock are different measures.

The short answer

Define what is being reconciled, list discrepancies and have an owner confirm them before any stock update.

Try it in three steps

  • Create two fictional product tables with units and timestamps.
  • Match by item ID and specification.
  • Report differences with source rows without adjusting records.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Both tables are fictional with matching timestamps and units. Calculate differences without real stock adjustments.

Practice material (fictional)

Book stock: A 10 units, B 5. Count: A 8, B 5. Difference is count minus book.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Compare two practice stock tables and list unmatched items, quantity differences and unit mismatches. Do not decide which is correct or write back (changing the original system or sheet).

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

A differs by -2 units and B by zero. The tables alone do not establish the cause; inspect transaction records.

If it goes wrong

Keep differing variants separate; fuzzy matching supplies candidates, not confirmed matches.

Check your result

Every exception is traceable and real adjustments require an authorized owner.
