What is AI? Start with one small task

AI stands for artificial intelligence and includes recognition, prediction and generation, using approaches such as rules or learning from data.

The short answer

Here we practice text-generating AI by organizing a short passage and checking omissions. Its output is a candidate, not an automatically correct conclusion.

Try it in three steps

  • Write three messy purchasing notes without customer details.
  • Ask for item, quantity and unresolved questions.
  • Compare every field with the original and remove invented details.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Use any working text chat. Add these fictional notes to the prompt.

Practice material (fictional)

Pencils: 3 boxes confirmed. Eraser quantity undecided. Possibly 2 more boxes of pencils, awaiting a reply.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Turn these notes into a table. Mark missing fields as unknown and do not guess quantities: [practice notes].

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

Only 3 boxes are confirmed. The extra 2 are tentative and the eraser quantity is unknown. Five confirmed boxes would be wrong.

If it goes wrong

If a possible purchase becomes a confirmed order, separate tentative and confirmed items and repeat.

Check your result

Finish when you can name a useful improvement and identify fields that still need human confirmation.
