What is an AI agent compared with chat?

An agent combines a model with tools, feedback and multiple actions toward a goal.

The short answer

Chat may suggest a filing plan; an agent may read files, generate outputs and check them. Ability to act is not unlimited business authorization.

Try it in three steps

  • Choose a read-only task, such as listing file types in a practice folder.
  • Confirm available tools and access boundaries.
  • Check the resulting inventory rather than the plan alone.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Prepare two practice text files. Without file access, plan only and do not claim a read.

Practice material (fictional)

Place notes.txt and rules.txt in a practice folder and request names and types only.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Read this practice folder and list names and types without moving or deleting anything. State access failures instead of simulating results.

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

A tool-enabled agent should return two checkable entries; plain chat should explain the method rather than pretend to see files.

If it goes wrong

If it says arranged without an output, request the inventory or an explicit incomplete status.

Check your result

You can separate advice, tool execution and completed work.
