What is a terminal, and why does AI suggest commands?

A terminal runs text commands for programs and the operating system.

The short answer

Commands may inspect, modify, download or connect externally. A short command is not necessarily harmless; understand its directory and effects.

Try it in three steps

  • Start with commands that display the current directory and files.
  • Ask for a part-by-part explanation of a proposed command.
  • Review deletion, elevated permissions and downloaded scripts separately.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Explain only. Command syntax can differ between macOS/Linux and Windows.

Practice material (fictional)

macOS/Linux: pwd shows the working directory and ls lists files. Windows PowerShell provides Get-Location and Get-ChildItem.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Explain this command's working directory, reads, writes, networking and recovery without running it or requesting a password.

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

Explain that these inspect rather than modify. Confirm the platform and directory before real execution.

If it goes wrong

Read unfamiliar pipelines or remote scripts instead of blindly copying them.

Check your result

You can distinguish inspection, modification and external actions and identify the working directory.
