How do you save a useful prompt as a template?

Save the task specification rather than one successful answer.

The short answer

Define inputs, limits, output and checks, then test with a different sample. Version templates so obsolete business rules do not persist.

Try it in three steps

  • Replace names and specific items with placeholders.
  • Include a normal and an incomplete example.
  • Record the revision date and intended scope.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Replace personal details in a working prompt with variables.

Practice material (fictional)

Original: Organize colleague Lee's Wednesday meeting into decisions, actions and questions.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Turn this working instruction into a template with input placeholders, exclusions, output fields and checks. Remove private information.

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

Use placeholders for meeting notes and categories, keep unknown-owner rules and test a new sample without retaining real names.

If it goes wrong

When a template becomes bloated, remove unrelated patches and retest representative samples.

Check your result

It works on another task of the same type and identifies rules that need updating.
