How should an owner measure AI's benefit?

Measure total task time, errors, rework and review, not generation speed alone.

The short answer

Establish a baseline before the pilot. Illustrative numbers may explain a calculation but are not customer results.

Try it in three steps

  • Choose comparable samples and record complexity.
  • Time preparation, execution, review and rework separately.
  • Keep failures and compare complete outcomes.

A practice prompt

Before you start

All figures are teaching assumptions, not customer outcomes.

Practice material (fictional)

Comparable task: manual baseline 30 minutes; pilot preparation 5, processing 8, review 10 and rework 9 minutes.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Create a measurement table for sample, manual baseline, AI time, review, rework and outcome. Leave measurements blank.

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

Pilot total is 32 minutes, 2 minutes longer. Comparing generation's 8 minutes with 30 and claiming 22 saved is incorrect.

If it goes wrong

Do not compare average times across different difficulty levels without grouping or comparable samples.

Check your result

Benefit claims trace to measured records including failures and additional labor.
