How can AI ask useful questions without stalling?

Ask only about missing details that change scope, cost or correctness.

The short answer

Let routine formatting use stated defaults. This avoids both reckless guessing and endless confirmation.

Try it in three steps

  • Separate essential facts from routine defaults.
  • Limit the first round to three material questions.
  • Have it complete independent work while waiting.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Separate content-changing questions from formatting preferences.

Practice material (fictional)

Prepare an item quote without quantity, model or currency. Table color is unspecified.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Ask up to three questions that change the proposal. Default to a simple table and organize existing material without waiting for unrelated details.

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

Ask about quantity, model and currency, not color, and invent no price.

If it goes wrong

If it asks many preference questions, ask what decision each answer would change.

Check your result

Questions are limited while essential facts remain explicit.
