Can you rely on agent memory?

Memory may retain preferences or summaries, but it is not a task ledger.

The short answer

Store critical rules, versions and current status in inspectable files. Outdated memory must not override an approved current price.

Try it in three steps

  • Write current rules with an effective date.
  • Have the agent read the designated file before answering.
  • Test how it handles a conflicting old rule.

A practice prompt

Before you start

Both rules are fictional and test version conflicts.

Practice material (fictional)

Old rule: up to 5 sample packs. Current rule dated 2026-10-17: up to 3. Use the current rules file.

Replace placeholders in the prompt with this material, or append the material if there are no placeholders. Reading time excludes doing the exercise.

Use these current rules. Identify conflicts with older records and stop using outdated values rather than silently merging them.

What to look for (not a recorded test result)

Use 3 and identify the old value as obsolete, without averaging to 4 or promising permanent memory.

If it goes wrong

If it answers from assumed memory, request the exact rule in the file.

Check your result

A fresh session reproduces the rules from files and identifies outdated information.
